Co-habitation, pre-nuptial agreements & disputes

When entering into a relationship, protection of your financial position is not always your first thought. Whilst unromantic it is sensible planning in the hope that you may never need to refer back to it. Whether you are intending to live with somebody or are intending to marry, we can draw up an agreement reflecting your intentions.

You should be aware that the law relating to couples that choose to live together outside of marriage is very different to the law that relates to couples that marry. Being a "common law" husband or wife does not confer any legal status upon you. We will consider with you the options and enforceability of all agreements available to you. The Government are looking to reform this area but that is still some way off.

Just because you are not married does not mean that a separation will be any easier. The law is very different from that concerning the breakdown of a marriage. This is something we understand. It is a complex area of law drawing in issues from land and property law, trusts, contract, domestic violence and children law. We can direct you to the appropriate remedies for your individual circumstances.
