Our Maidstone Office

Maidstone has the fortune to be located right in the Kent Downs. The Kent Downs is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and forms part of the North Downs.  Maidstone is a heritage market town in the heart of Kent with a wealth of attractions, stunning countryside and fantastic shopping.

The schools in Maidstone are ranked as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, plus Kent still has grammar schools. Maidstone is close to all the London universities, plus Canterbury also has two well-regarded universities, the University of Kent and Canterbury Christchurch University.

Maidstone offers a great range of amenities and transport connections.

Our Tenterden Office

Tenterden has reams of heritage.  It’s beautiful High Street is lined with historic houses, shops restaurants and pubs. Tenterden has been named as one of the Top Ten places to live in the UK. By using the fast train from Ashford, London is only a one hour commute. Making  Tenterden a gateway to London.  Whilst Tenterden itself is not in the Cranbrook School Catchment, the villages around often do fall within this catchment

Our Canterbury Office

Canterbury is the second most visited City in England and is fast-becoming one of the most desirable places to live and work.

Canterbury has a spectacular cathedral, beautiful parks and gardens, fantastic shopping, entertainment and leisure facilities as well as being only 10 minutes from the sea.  

Our London Office

Docklands solicitors was formed in 2005 to provide bespoke legal expertise to individuals who live and work in this thriving area known as "Docklands".  October 2016 saw the Whitehead Monckton merger.

Located right in the centre of Canary Wharf, the offices are conveniently located on Admirals Way, with a main entrance on the waterside. 

Canary wharf is fast becoming the preferred choice for the city's professionals to settle.  There are so many things to see and do in the area meaning residents can live, work and play all within the E14 postcode.

The office is just a 2 minute walk from both Canary Wharf Tube station or Heron Quays station on the DLR. 

Whether in Kent or London all our offices offer a friendly and pleasant working environment, with the majority of our staff being located in our Maidstone office.  Whitehead Monckton supports flexible working practices, implements family friendly initiatives and assists employees to achieve a balance in their work commitments and their life outside of work.

Our Culture

Whitehead Monckton is a Limited Company where the previous Partners are now Directors of the firm.  Stephen Beck is Managing Director and reports into the Management Board.  Together with the Executive Board, Stephen manages the firm in delivering the strategic plan. 

Our lawyers are divided into relevant departments, each headed by a Director/Associate Director. The heads of department manage and monitor the performance of their respective teams to successfully achieve performance targets. The emphasis for the departments is one of specialism, ensuring that we can provide the very best comprehensive service to our clients, no matter what their needs.
 
Each department also has its own integrated support team to provide our clients with a seamlessly efficient administrative service.
 
We are of a sufficient size to have a specialist team of managers within Central Services providing support to the business with accounts, human resources, marketing and information technology provided centrally.  This enables the lawyers and their support staff to concentrate on providing you with the excellent service you require.

Training contracts

 

Our trainee solicitors are valued as key team members from the start of their training contract and we are committed to providing the very highest quality in-house training and mentoring for each individual.

We welcome applications from candidates with excellent qualifications. A 2:1 degree is essential (preferably in Law.) Equally important are enthusiasm and initiative combined with excellent inter-personal and team working skills. Unfortunately we are not able to offer sponsorship for the Legal Practice Course.

During your training contract you will have placements in different areas of the company, these are commonly known as "seats".  These include:

Frequently asked questions

I obtained a 2:2 degree can I still apply for a training contract?   A 2:1 degree or higher is not an absolute requirement but it is preferred.

How long do training contracts last?  Training contracts usually last two years

Will I join an office near where I live?  With offices in Maidstone, Canterbury, Tenterden and Canary Wharf, Trainees are expected to be flexible with their locations throughout the duration of their contracts.

How will I be assessed during my training contract?   Typically, each seat will be for the duration of 6 months. At the end of your seat you will have an appraisal meeting with your assigned supervisor.

How much support do I get?   

  • You will have a supervisor who will oversee your day to day work.
  • You will have the support of your colleagues within the department
  • Regular meetings with your Training Principle and Human Resources
  • Regular appraisals
  • Regular contact with fellow Trainees

What will the assessment process be like?   Our assessment days are planned as a two-way process, whereby you will get the opportunity to find out information about the company, meet several key people and to understand our culture, aims and long term goals.  At the same time it will give us the opportunity to spend a day with you and to learn more about you.

Assessment days take place in groups (maximum of 10.) Activities will include; individual presentations, numeracy/in-tray exercises, group exercise and individual interviews.

Work Experience

We are very pleased to be able to offer unpaid work experience placements to students wishing to develop their skills within the legal industry and gain an insight into the workings of a large regional firm of solicitors.

Work experience placements generally take place at our Maidstone office.

We aim to provide five work experience placements per year as follows:

  • Winter Holiday (one student for one, one week period).
  • Spring Holiday (one student for one, one week period).
  • Summer Holiday (three students for three, one week periods).

Students will spend one week covering all aspects of law. We do try and accommodate students in an area of law that is of interest to them, but this does depend upon business needs at the time of placement.

Throughout the week the student will be assigned a mentor who will be able to assist them with any queries they may have throughout the placement.

Please be aware that placements for 2017 have now been filled.
