When Kerin Speedie, Katie Broadfield, Hannah Durston and Caroline Speed undertook training to become Dementia Friends Champions in December 2013, there were just 25,000 Friends with an ambitious task to reach 1 million by March 2015.

Our Champions give information sessions to our own staff, staff of other companies and members of the public to help raise awareness of dementia and how it affects people living with it and their loved ones. Anyone attending those sessions pledges to undertake an ‘action’ to continue the social movement and thereafter becomes a Dementia Friend. The cascading effect of the information sessions meant that Dementia Friends reached their target a month early celebrating creating one million Friends on Saturday 21 February 2015.

Dementia Friends was launched in February 2013 to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding which means that many people with the condition can face social exclusion. The initiative, which is jointly run with Public Health England and funded by the Cabinet Office and Department of Health, combines face to face Information Sessions and online videos to help people learn more about dementia and the small things they can do to make a difference.

Other well known businesses such as Marks & Spencer, Asda, easyJet, Argos and The Royal Bank of Scotland have also encouraged their staff to become Dementia Friends in a concerted effort to build a dementia-friendly society and support people with the condition to take part in their local community. The movement has also been endorsed by celebrities including Ruth Jones, Alesha Dixon, Eamonn Holmes and Pixie Lott who have also become Dementia Friends, together with The Cabinet, Ed Miliband and more than 100 MPs.

As part of a long-term commitment to help more communities and businesses become dementia-friendly, Alzheimer's Society has set a further ambitious target of creating four million Dementia Friends by 2020 and Whitehead Monckton’s Champions intend to assist with this.

We will be holding additional information sessions throughout National Dementia Awareness Week (18 – 22 May 2015) and will also be offering a 10% discount on our usual Lasting Power of Attorney fees for enquiries made during this week. If you would like to attend an information session or enquire about Lasting Powers of Attorney please contact Claire Porter on 01622 698044 or claireporter@whitehead-monckton.co.uk.
