Civil Partnerships

Overview

Since December 2005, same sex couples in the UK have had the right to enter into a Civil Partnership. These give same sex couples broadly speaking the same rights and responsibilities as married couples in terms of their rights.

Similar to marriage a civil partnership can only end by death, annulment or dissolution. The process for annulment or dissolution is a court-based process much like divorce.

As in the case of divorce the Court also has power to make orders in relation to financial matters and children.

You may also, if you are thinking of entering into a civil partnership, wish to consider a pre-civil partnership agreement which is similar to a pre-nuptial agreement and would set out financial and other arrangements in the event your Civil Partnership breaks down.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, which came into force on 13 March 2014, enables same sex couples to marry as an alternative to a civil partnership.
