A Day In The Life of.......
Summarise what your job is?
I am the Head of the Family Department at the firm and I manage work across our four offices, as well as co-managing the Tenterden office with my colleague Janet Goode. I am a Resolution trainer, training solicitors and psychotherapists across the country in better working practices and the art of effective negotiation. I specialise in face-to-face discussions and I am an active collaborative and mediation practitioner, as well as a solicitor of 16 years standing.
How do you get ready to start your day?
I start the day by making myself a very good quality cup of coffee - which I need as I get my children ready for school. I cycle to work as often as I can and once in the office, deal with any urgent requests and the post. I have worked out an order of priority for work before I sit down at my desk – usually over that first cup of coffee of the day.
What is your favourite part of the job?
I am constantly challenged by my job and the unique situations it throws up on a daily basis. I am very driven and focussed in seeking the best outcomes for clients and I enjoy being an active part of a constructive, respectful, negotiated family law solution which promotes the wellbeing of any child in the family.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
I remain deeply frustrated by our crumbling, poorly resourced and funded court system. It is very hard to explain long delays and procedural problems to a general public who still assume that we have a 21st Century, fit-for-purpose judicial system. This is not to blame court staff or Judges, but politicians who withdrew legal aid and continue to decimate this once proud service.
How do you relax when you finish work?
I have a very large drum kit.
