I graduated with a degree in English in 1993 and studied for the GDL and LPC in Guildford, Surrey. My training contract was also in Surrey and I qualified as a solicitor in 1998 moving to practice in Kent in 2000. I joined Whitehead Monckton’s family law team in April 2013 for the opening of the Canterbury Office. In April 2019 I became an Associate Director.
I have been a family lawyer for all my professional career and have developed a particular specialism in cases involving pensions and am a solutions focused lawyer with a proven track record in resolving complex financial settlements involving multiple properties, investments and businesses.
I am a Resolution Accredited specialist and a member of the Law Society's Family Law Panel and I trained as a collaborative lawyer in 2014. I actively promote mediation, round table meetings and the collaborative law approach to family law. I am a member of the East Kent collaborative law “around the table group”.
I have expertise in all aspects of family law including:
I am a past President of Kent Law Society, having been Vice President and prior to that Honorary Secretary of this Society for 8 years. I have appeared on Radio Kent talking about my work with Kent Law Society. I am also a former President of the Medway Law Society and I am a current member of Resolution and Kent Resolution and the Canterbury POD.
I have recently taken on the role of Training Principal for the firm and am required to manage the delivery of training for our Trainee Solicitors and be the main point of contact for them. I take an active lead in the development of the Trainees and ensure that our training standards are being maintained.
What my clients say:
“I cannot thank you enough for your advice and assistance through the whole process. When I came to see you in Canterbury to get the ball rolling, I asked you then to cut to the chase and tell me where we would end up. Whilst, quite understandably and properly, you didn’t wish to be drawn, the estimate which I pressed you to give, was almost exactly what was eventually ordered. If only my ex wife had received such good advice!
You have always handled the matter with ultimate professionalism and great care. The advice has been measured and the tactics, including the selection of an excellent barrister, made the whole process much less stressful and ensured an equitable outcome.”
"I want to say a big thank you for all your help during the divorce process of my daughter. Although divorce is an unpleasant experiece your advice and professionalism made us through it smoothly. Also a big thank you to Stefaine for facilitating emails, responses and all the paperwork required for this."
“I would very much like to thank you for all your help in this process, I remember when I first met you and was pretty much all over the place, but you gave me a very clear idea on what would be happening. The offer you were successful on was so good and I was very happy with the outcome. I would also like to thank Stefanie for all her help as well, she is so very good at her job and always very cheerful.”
"Firstly I would like to say my experience with Emma, Stefanie and the team at Whitehead Monckton in Canterbury has been a very positive one. Emma has always been professional, friendly and approachable and importantly, she has kept me focused on what I need to do whilst moving things forward quickly and calmly. In what could have been a very unpleasant and acrimonious divorce, I am pleased to say that Emma has facilitated a situation in which we have maintained our integrity and we have been able to pass an agreement to the Family Court for review."
“I would definitely recommend Whitehead Monckton to anyone seeking legal advice.”
"I would just like to say, since my divorce started, Emma has handled my case in a very approachable, professional manner. Frustrations have occurred with my ex-husband, although Emma has dealt with the issues in hand swiftly and has been supportive of me throughout".

"When I needed a Solicitor for my divorce, Emma came highly recommended and did not disappoint. You have a quiet steely determination, you are the ultimate professional and you get the job done, but you also genuinely care about your clients. Thank you for being in my corner and getting me through”.
“It has been a very difficult time and I would just like to say a very big thank you for all your assistance and advice. "Can I take this opportunity to thank you and your team for all your help. Its been a long and trying time but I'm not sure we could have got here any quicker in the circumstances! I have really appreciated all the support you have given me".
“When looking for a solicitor, I recalled a friend being happy with Whitehead Monckton. I could not have wished for a better service. Not only did my solicitor guide me through the legalities of divorce, but also provided help and guidance through what became an emotional rollercoaster. All staff were helpful, professional and explained everything in a way I could understand. I have continued to use Whitehead Monckton ever since.”
“There’s no getting away from the fact that going through a divorce is tough. It’s a drain on your time and your emotions. And it’s complicated. There are lots of stages to go through and lots of daunting legal terminology to get your head around. It’s more than a bit frightening and you quickly realise you simply can’t do it on your own. That’s why I was so pleased when I met Emma at Whitehead Monckton. She immediately put my mind at rest about the process and was very clear on what I needed to do and how she would work on my behalf to keep everything moving forward. She took time to understand my personal circumstances, was tireless on the detail, patient with my constant questions, clear with her explanations, always at the end of a telephone or email and – just as importantly – was a constant source of calm reassurance, which (looking back) was worth its weight in gold. Emma’s professionalism always felt personal and the final outcome was exactly as we had planned. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Emma. She made an enormous difference to how I felt going into the divorce process and stood beside me every step of the way to its conclusion.”
When out of the office:
I enjoy running and swimming for fitness and to help moderate my love of good food and good wine! I am often to be found socialising with my friends and family and I also enjoy watching films, going to the theatre and tending to my vegetable garden in the spring and summer months. I travel regularly to France for family holidays and confess to being a bit of a Francophile!
