For my second seat I joined the Tax and Estate Planning Department (TEP). I had worked in that department previously but solely within the niche area of Court of Protection, so I was looking forward to experiencing private client in a much broader sense. A month into the seat the country went into lockdown and I was asked to go on furlough, fortunately the firm stayed in touch and provided regular updates on when I would be able to return to work.

Upon my return I was informed that the Corporate team had been instructed to work on a large deal which they needed a trainee’s assistance with, I was subsequently seconded to the Corporate and Employment team for 3 months. The deal was in relation to the sale of a company which had footholds in the UK, Canada and Slovakia. Whilst assisting on this deal I also undertook work on smaller acquisitions, drafted contracts and assisted with a couple of Employment matters. Co-emp had not been on my radar as a seat option but I found I enjoyed it immensely.

I then returned to TEP for the remainder of my seat and mainly worked on drafting Wills and LPAs.  I am now in my third seat working in the Property department undertaking both Residential and Commercial work.

At the moment, my aim is to either return to Corporate or Dispute Resolution for my final seat.  As I have not yet had much experience of property work I am also open minded about remaining in this department should I enjoy my time here. I have learnt that it is important to remain open minded with seats as you never know which areas you may enjoy in practice!
